Jewelry is something that has to do with emotion. That aspect of jewelry really interests me.
New work for Nomad Earrings
Katy Nelson, the maker behind Nomad Earrings.
Katy is a force for natural beauty. She amazes me with her talented jewelry making while doubling as a wilderness ranger/field biologist. After recently photographing her works, I found myself inspired to interview her for my blog.
Where are you from?
Where do you hang your hat now?
Where may your studio be?
My studio has been wherever I find myself. All of my earring making supplies are packed into movable totes. I've been a Nomad in my adult life. However, now that I have a homebase in Salmon, I look forward to creating a more stable studio space.
Favorite Place to create?
In a cozy place with good company.
Wilderness Ranger and Field Biologist (Wolverine Chaser)
What was your first job out of college and how did you land that position?
My first job after college in Nebraska was on a trails crew(maintaining trails) in the black canyon in Colorado. I couldn't wait to move to the mountains. I had no trails experience so I talked about painting picnic tables in my resume. Surprisingly, it worked.
What was the first piece of jewelry you ever made? How have your designs evolved? How do you go about creating a new piece? I’d love to know about your design process—choosing materials, design development, how the team works to do this, etc.
My designs all come from some element of an adventure, some tangible piece of a place. I am a nostalgic person and a daydreamer. These qualities resonate in my designs. For example, when I look at the willow tree design, I am transported to my childhood backyard. The wave design takes me to a boulder strewn beach in Northern California that I walked with my best friend. Joe has added some designs as well, like the Karma design. And my friend Becky has drawn some, too. I imagine their designs are personal as well.
If you could see anyone wearing your earrings, who would it be?
My Sister, my best friend, my mom...because if I'm seeing them wear my earrings it means we're all in the same place.
What advice would you give to your 23-year-old self?
Love yourself for who you are but wake up each day and try to be a better version of yourself.
My best friend has this quote on her bathroom mirror and I love it: "I awake in the morning torn between the desire to save the world and the desire to savor the world. This makes it really hard to plan my day."
Soundtrack To Your Life?
I've had this song stuck in my head since the 7th grade: Annie Lennox "No more I love yous" I can't explain it. Now I just embrace it: "Doobie, doobie, doop, doop, doop. Aaah, ah."
